Center Hill Sewer Project

Center Hill Sewer

Growth in the west and northwest areas of Paragould has nearly exceeded the existing sanitary sewer systems ability to convey the raw sewage being produced.  The fifteen inch interceptor line serving the area has reached its design capacity.  An interceptor line is generally a large diameter line that is intersected with smaller lines called laterals.  The main purpose of an interceptor line is to collect sewer from lateral lines and convey it to a lift station or treatment facility.  An interceptor line does not normally have any services connected to it were lateral lines do.  To resolve this problem PLWC along with the consulting firm, Civil Engineering Associates LLC, came up with a solution.

The solution included the construction of a sewer pump station, force main, interceptor line and lateral lines.  A sewer pump station was constructed at the end of Bogil Road next to the Francis Bland Floodway Ditch.  The station contains three pumps that pump at a rate of 1500 gallons per minute.  As growth occurs, the pumps can be replaced with 3000 gallon per minute pumps.

A 12 inch force main, approximately 5200 feet long, was installed along Carroll Road from the pump station.  The new force main connects to an existing force main that carries all the waste water in Paragould to the Waste Water Treatment Plant.  As future growth occurs and sewer production goes up the 12 inch force main will have to be replaced with a new 20 inch force main from the lift station all the way to the treatment plant.  This will occur at the time the smaller existing pumps are replaced with larger pumps.

The interceptor line is a 30 inch diameter pipe installed along the north side of the Francis Bland Floodway Ditch.  It runs from S. Rocking Chair Road to the pump station at the end of Bogil Road.  It is approximately 5500 feet long and installed at an average depth of 26 feet.

Lateral lines were installed along S. Rocking Chair Road and Bogil Road.  One lateral line extends from the existing interceptor sewer line to the new line along the Francis Bland Floodway Ditch.   The other line is along S. Rocking Chair Road running from the existing interceptor line at Stidham Lane to the new interceptor line.  The combined length of the lateral lines installed is approximately 5500 feet installed at an average depth of 12 feet.  The lateral lines were built with 10, 12, 15 and 18 inch diameter pipe.

All major construction on the project is complete.  Testing on the station, manholes and lines has also been done.  The contractor is currently working on the cleanup and repairing construction defects found during the inspection and testing process.  Additional testing may be required after the defects have been repaired.  All defects should be corrected and the system put on line by the first of October 2009.
