From the Principal

We have had a busy couple of weeks at First Lutheran School with a lot of extra activities.  Congratulations are in order for many of our students.  First, I would like to congratulate the fifth and sixth grade quiz bowl teams on their outstanding performances at their respective quiz bowl tournaments.  We had outstanding performances from many of those students.  I want to say a special thanks to Mrs. Nieting for her outstanding job in preparing our students for this competition.  Also, thanks to Mrs. DeLung, Jeff Myers, and Susan Noess for volunteering their time to help at these competitions.

Next, I would like to congratulate our band students.  Last Saturday our band students played at the Solo and Ensemble competition in Dover, AR.  Our students received thirty-four total metals last Saturday.  Thirty-one of those metals were first division metals.  Outstanding!  Thanks to Mrs. Davis for preparing our students and to Mrs. Cholcher for volunteering her time to accompany our students.

Finally, in January we held the school Geography Bee.  Trey Myers was the school Geography Bee winner.  We were informed this week that Trey has qualified for the state Geography Bee in Conway, AR.  Trey was one of the one hundred students from the state that qualified for this competition.  Congratulations Trey.

We are so blessed to have dedicated teachers and volunteers to help our children grow in all curriculum areas.  We are also blessed to have helpful and involved parents who support FLS.  Thanks for your involvement in your student’s education.

Chapel leaders for the month of March are: Mr. Pralle, the 5th grade class, and Pastor Stuckwisch from First Lutheran Church.  Our chapel theme for the school year has been focusing on leadership and the qualities of a leader.  If you have the opportunity on Wednesday mornings at 8:10 a.m. we would like to invite you to attend our chapel service.  Chapel offerings for the month will be going to the Children’s Emergency Shelter.

Remember that next week is the last week of the Third Quarter.  It seems to have gone by so quickly.  Information about Parent/Teacher conferences will be coming home.  Check backpacks.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Chick-Fil-a night on March 16th

Come out and support FLS PALS at Chick-Fil-A on Tuesday, March 16th.  Tell your friends and co-workers, and make sure they mention FLS at the counter.  FLS PALS will receive 10% of the night's receipts, and you don't have to cook!

PALS Unevent

March 8 - April 2 is PALS "Unevent Month".  What is an "Unevent"?  An opportunity to create any special event you want and honor that event by purchasing a $10 ticket from PALS; no wrapping paper to buy or cookie dough to freeze.  PALS gets the full $10 and you get a tax deduction.  So send your Aunt a $10 Unevent ticket for her birthday, saying the donation was made in her honor.  Or honor your family pet's birthday.  Or honor your child for making his/her bed and cleaning up their room.  The event is your choice, and the school gets the full benefits of your donation!  Please contact Sheryl Taylor at 452-3174, if you have any questions.

Quiz Bowl New

We have come to the end of another very successful quiz bowl season.  Last week the fifth and sixth grade teams attended the Western Arkansas Educational Service Cooperative Quiz Bowl Tournaments held at the family ministry building of First Baptist Church in Greenwood.  On Thursday, March 4, the sixth grade team competed against 17 other teams in 3 morning matches. After lunch, we entered the quarterfinals seeded 6th. We defeated Van Buren Northridge and Greenwood East Hills to make it to the tournament finals where we lost to Alma. We proudly accepted the 2nd place trophy! (Last year this team took home 3rd place.)  Members of the sixth grade team are:  Trey Myers, Andrew Staples, Collin DeLung, Abby Barr, Sara Allen, Jazmynn Jackson, and Sarah Freeny.

The next day the fifth grade team made the trip to Greenwood and competed against 13 other teams with very similar results. We went into the quarterfinals after lunch seeded 4th. We defeated Van Buren Central and Mulberry to earn our way into the finals, before losing to Greenwood East Hills and receiving a 2nd place trophy! The fifth grade team is composed of the following students:  Spencer Wehunt, Mason Westphal, Matthew Austin, Elizabeth Noess, Andy Davis, and Ryan Davis.

We would like to thank our parents and grandparents who came and watched many of our matches this year. We especially would like to Mr. Jeff Myers and Mrs. Susan Noess who volunteered to serve as judges and moderators at our tournaments.  We also would also like to thank Mrs. DeLung for being willing to serve as a coach for many of our practice matches.

Earlier this week we participated in a tournament at Trinity  Junior High School with the 3 Catholic schools in Fort Smith.  Our two teams placed third and fifth out of 14 teams based on total points scored.  One of our teams did defeat the team that eventually took first place.

All of these students have been outstanding representatives of our school. Other parents and coaches always make comments about how well behaved and mannerly are players are.  It is always a joy to take them to these tournaments.

Our trophies will be on display at the school office until Spring Break. Come and take a look.  We are very proud of them!
