Friday Note

 May 13, 2011

From the Principal

School is quickly coming to a close.  There are always a lot of activities going on at the end of the school year.  Please check the Friday Note or contact the school office for a schedule of these activities.  Just a reminder, we will be in school on Monday, May 30.

Even though the date is passed for the early registration we are still taking registrations forms for the 2011-2012 school year.  For those of you interested in Kindergarten for next year, we have four spots remaining.  Please turn your enrollment forms into the school office as soon as possible.

I am again trying to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) through their annual MDA Lock-Up.  If you would like to contribute to this worthy cause you can do it a couple of different ways.  First, you can drop your donation off at the school office.  Second, you can go to https://www.joinmda.org/MyLockup/MyHomepage/tabid/216003/Participant/fls/Default.aspx and contribute online.  Thanks for your help.

Thinking Outside the House  From Parent Pages

The good news is that outdoor experiences are cheap, easy, and in close proximity. This should fit nicely in the family budget. Here are suggestions:

Make seasonal visits to a favorite nature space to note the changes.

Document the changes with drawings or journal entries. Check out field guides from the library that will help you identify local flora and fauna.

Designate a “wonder” box for children to collect and examine treasures from the outdoors.

Make inexpensive cameras available for picture taking. On rainy days, your child can examine favorite bits of nature or make a scrapbook.

Set a goal to learn about insects, rocks, birds, trees, cloud formations, and/or stars. These are all topics near and dear to most children’s hearts, and the study of them will give you many opportunities to point out how wonderful God is.

Schedule a daily green hour when all family members are outside together.

Discovering the outdoors is also a spiritual exercise. God made our world for us to enjoy. The more time we spend there, and the more we learn about it, the more we foster gratitude for what our heavenly Father has given us.  When we are content with what God gives us, we lose the secularly imposed need to collect things. With God’s help, and a little effort, we can find ourselves shouting:  “Kids, it’s time to come in now, and take a bath!”

Have a great weekend.

GOLF TOURNAMENT

It is that time of year again.  We have begun work on our annual golf tournament.  The tournament will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Fianna Hills Country Club.  It is a four-person scramble.  If you can’t find four people for a team, but would still like to play we can put you on a team.  If you have questions about the golf tournament please contact the school office.

CHAPEL OFFERING

Chapel offerings for May will be going to Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church and School in Cullman, AL.  We have received word that they suffered damage in the tornadoes that devastated Alabama.  Please remember to bring in your offerings.

“Mark Perry – Friend in Music and Life”

The “Mark Perry – Friend in Music and Life” event was a huge success.  A big thank you goes to everyone who helped make this event possible.  As a result of your generous support, we were able to raise $6622.00 for the FLS Fine Arts Program!  Mark would be touched by your kindness.

SPRING CONCERT

Our Spring Concert will be next Thursday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m.  Performing will be the Primary Choir, the Junior Choir, Fifth Grade Band, and Sixth Grade Band.  There will be some delightful surprises for you in this concert.  Winners of the Landscape Photography Contest will be displayed during this concert in a very special way!  Choir members grades K-4 meet in Mrs. Ballard’s room at 6:00, and Band members meet in the Art room at 6:00.  Dress is your spring best!!!  See you then!

BOX TOPS

Please have your family and friends save too, so that we can earn even more next year than we did this year!  Thank you - PALS
